Jake summoned Liam with a toss of his head. When Liam approached him he grabbed the boy firmly round the waist and planted a kiss on his cheek, then ruffled his hair and let him go. At least he let go of him, which isn’t quite the same thing. “Liam,” he said quietly, “I’ve got a confession” The boy looked terrified but stood rooted to the spot. “What you did before the deputy took our visitor away …..I could have stopped you doing that, but I didn’t. In fact I stopped Jonah from stopping you. That was because I knew you were going to do what I wanted to do , but daren’t. I’ve always told you that violence is wrong, and it is, but I think everybody in this room secretly applauded what you did. Did you see Ning’s mom?” The boy nodded. “Did Ning see?” He shook his head “I don’t think so”, he said. “I stopped him going in.” Jake nodded and said quietly, “Well done son. You’re a good boy you know.” Liam burst into tears and hugged Jake, but I was pleased to note that he only sobbed. There was no singing to himself. The tears were only of relief that it was over. No remorse, no guilt, no fear or insecurity. Just relief. After a while Jake whispered something in his ear. He nodded, wiped his eyes and went and hugged Ning. Well Jake got himself ready to go out and everybody else took their cue without being told. Jonah, Luke, Liam and Ning were remaining behind, since two of them had work to do and the other two had had enough excitement for one day. The Pastor, whom Jake intended to drop off on the way to Walmart, suggested it might be better to drop him, off on the way back. “Why’s that Reverend?” Jake asked. “Because you don’t speak Chinese” replied the pastor. Jake thought for a moment then said. “You’re right, but we’d best shop first” So we all went to Walmart, then we drove to izmit escort bayan the hospital where Jake parked alongside Mr. Morgan’s patrol car and he and the pastor went in. They came out together some time later and Jake looked grave. “I think Ning will be with us for some time,” he said. “Ning Chunhua will not be out of hospital anytime soon. At least she knows now that Ning will be OK and that her a…hole of a brother can’t get to him.” The deputy came out of the building, raised his hand in salute to us, then climbed into his patrol car and drove off. Jake sat in thought for a few moments before starting the engine and driving away. Nobody felt like talking much. After a while Pete asked, “Why has Ning got the same first name as his mother?” “It’s his surname,” replied the pastor. “Chinese say the surname first. His given name is ‘Bao’ which means a gem or treasure, but folks at school call him Ning because they’re used to given names coming first, and he lets ’em” “So we should really call him Bao?” The pastor shook his head. “I asked him that once and he said he prefers Ning. In any case Chinese never call someone by just their last name unless they’ve been given permission. You’d have to call him Ning Bao until he told you otherwise.” Pete fell silent and not another word was spoken until we dropped the pastor off at his house. We got back to find Ning and Liam asleep in each others’ arms on the couch in the TV room. Jonah was in Jake’s study and Luke was in the boys’ room with papers spread out all over the floor. He didn’t even notice when I looked in at him, so engrossed was he in his drawing. I returned to the kitchen to find Neil and Peter had arrived. Jake was recounting the morning’s events. “Well, you’re due some lunch,” said Neil. “It’s on me, so how does pizza sound?” “Well it’s a little cool for swimming today,” Jake replied, ” and the boys want some time with their trains, so it sounds great to me, but I can pay, you don’t have to….” “It’s on me”, repeated Neil, firmly. “In fact I’ll go fetch.” Neil exitted via the mudroom, but came back again with Deputy Morgan. “Jake,” said said the deputy, “I got some news but I don’t know whether it’s good or not”. “Spit it out Bob, I reckon we’re about ready for anything today”. “Well, it looks like Hon Li might not do time in the state pen. South Dakota are moving to extradite”. Jake looked stunned. “For what?” he said. “First degree homicide. Did you notice that green SUV parked near the end of your drive? Well it’s owner was found this morning in Murdo, South Dakota. He’d been clubbed to death. I’m having the SUV towed in now”. “What a piece of work that man is”, muttered Jake. “What’ll happen to him?” “Well,” said the deputy, “as you know we don’t have the death penalty here, but they’ve got it in South Dakota, and from the sounds of the sheriff I talked to just now, they’re going to push for it. Seems he’s got history. They believe he was responsible for Ning’s father disappearing but they’ve izmit eve gelen escort never been able to prove it.” “Then they can’t take that into account, surely” “No they can’t, but the sheriff wants us to help them get a death sentence”. “How can we do that?” “They want us to try him here in Massachusetts first, for assaulting Ning Chunhua. If he’s already got a conviction for assault and aggravated battery, that’ll as good as guarantee it. Now the Govenor doesn’t believe we should help other states to execute, since we don’t, but I’m willing to go for it in this case. ” ” That’ll mean Liam taking the witness stand”. The deputy shook his head. “Nope!” he said. “he didn’t see nuthin’ ” “He told me he did.” “Well I’m telling you he didn’t,” said Mr. Morgan. “Look Jake, this here’s Liam we’re talking about and he’s been through enough. If I go to hell for it, I’ll take the stand and swear he didn’t see nuthin’ “. It occurred to me that, if he used those exact words, he’d be telling the truth, but I wasn’t getting involved in THAT conversation. “Look, I’m going to get pizza, ” said Neil. “I’ll leave you folks to argue about life and death”. “You’ll need me to move old Betsy, Neil,” said the deputy. “I’m parked right behind you.” The two of them went. Well pizza was had and it was good. In the afternoon we played trains, until Mr. Ito turned up with his boys. Kori and Liam disappeared into the basement with Riku and Garret for rehearsals. Luke was talking business with Mr. Ito, leaving Pete, Sammy and myself to entertain Ning. After his sleep with Liam, Ning had reverted to being the same happy, funny and cute little boy that he always is. You would think that nothing had happened. Sammy could never do enough for Ning. He had taken the smaller boy under his wing and the two of them often got conspiratorial. Pete and I sat back against the wall and watched as the two of them played at some game they had invented between them. The rest of us might not have existed. Every so often they would break down in helpless laughter. Eventually Sammy whipped Ning’s socks off and tickled the soles of his feet. Ning loved it and kept begging Sammy to do it again. Jonah announced that he had to spend the day in Boston on Monday, and asked Luke if the layouts would be ready for then. “They’re ready now,” Luke replied. “You do know I still want to be a policeman when I grow up?” “I do Luke”, returned Jonah, “And you know I’m proud that you still think that way?” Jake said we could all go to Boston on Monday and asked Mr. Ito if he wanted to bring Garret and Riku. Mr. Ito said he was away on business on Monday, but Garret and Riku could sleep over on Sunday night if they wished. Jake said, “I’d sure like for them to do that Yori. We might be kinda late back Monday night. Would you like for them to sleepover then too?” “You very kind Jake,” returned Mr. Ito, “and I’m sure they would like that”. Then Mr. Ito turned to Jonah. “Jonah,” he said, izmit otele gelen escort “has Luke told you we have legal contract for you to sign?” “Yes he did Yori,” Jonah replied, ” and I’ve signed it as Luke’s legal guardian, which means I can’t sign it as the firm’s representative. I’ve emailed it to my boss for him to sign, and we’ll get the Luke’s copy signed when we get back.” “I have copy too, Jonah” replied Mr Yori. ” You can sign that copy for your firm. It will serve as guarantee until you get back to England”. “Willingly!” replied Jonah, “and thank you on Luke’s behalf. You’ve been a good friend to him”. Neil returned with – surprise, surprise – Peter in tow. “Jake,” he said, “we’ve got a new building for Liam’s layout. Can we put it on while he’s practising, and see if he notices”. “Yeah, just go on up boys,” Jake replied. “I’ll come with you, Neil, ” said Jonah. “I wanted to ask you something”. “Me too,” said Pete. “No way Peter”. Jonah replied. “Stay here with Sammy and Ning. I’ll only be a minute or two.” “You can come and give me a hand with dinner,” said Jake, noticing Pete’s disappointment. “Perhaps the boys will play trains after dinner.” Well the Itos and Neil and Peter stayed for dinner so Jake made a huge cottage pie. He called it “shepherd’s pie” but I think that’s an American thing. I mean, if they called it a “cowboy’s pie” it would probably have to contain bacon and beans. It seems to be the rule that cowboys don’t eat cows and shepherds don’t eat sheep. I don’t think America has a lot of shepherds. There doesn’t seem to be much grazing country. While Jake made cottage pie, Pete had prepared banana splits for everybody. We can never get my brother to do anything in the kitchen at home, but he was happy to help Jake. Well we did go up to the railway room after dinner, and it didn’t take Liam long to notice that the little settlement on his layout had gained a firehouse, complete with fire truck (see? I’m getting into American terminology). They played trains for a while, whilst I amused myself pointing out to Peter what all the bits of the Big Boy he had modelled actually did. It seemed incredible to me that he had done such a superb job without even knowing all that. When Neil, Peter and the Itos departed, Jake suggested Monopoly, and I did NOT groan. On the contrary I told myself that a little humiliation would help me build character. It did take until bedtime for Liam to clean everybody out, and I was the last to crumble before his steamroller tactics, but I found that I didn’t mind. Liam was still cute, even as he delivered the coup de grace. At bedtime Kori made a unilateral decision. He decided that Jake had enjoyed an undisturbed night the previous night, and must not be allowed to get used to it. We showered and settled into our various beds but, by midnight, it was a different story. TO BE CONTINUED If you have enjoyed this story you will probably enjoy previous stories by the same author on Nifty’s Gay Adult/Youth Archive. Letter from America, Stranger on a Train, Marooned, also The Pen-Pals, on the Gay Young Friends site. For a much longer story by a different author, I would recommend A Neglected Boy, by Jacob Lion. I’d like to thank Jacob for his help in writing this. I couldn’t have done it on my own.
